OTTAWA, Canada -- Defensemen John Carlson (Natick, Mass.) and Ryan McDonagh (St. Paul, Minn.) netted goals, but Team USA fell here to Canada, 5-2, in a pre-tournament game in advance of the World Cup of Hockey 2016.

“We have a lot to work on,” said John Tortorella, head coach of the U.S. World Cup of Hockey Team, “and that’s what these pre-tournament games and our camp is for. We’ll have a good day off tomorrow and get back to work on Monday.”

Canada jumped out to a 2-0 lead on power play goals 2:11 apart by Logan Couture and John Tavares at 11:14 and 13:25 of the opening period. Jay Bouwmeester extended Canada’s advantage to 3-0 with a wrist shot from the left faceoff dot with 4:22 left in the frame.

Team USA responded just 57 seconds later when McDonagh’s wrist shot found its way through traffic and past goaltender Braden Holtby to cut Canada’s lead to 3-1 after one period.

The U.S. converted on a five-on-three advantage just :38 into the second period as Carlson one-timed a feed in the slot from Patrick Kane (Buffalo, N.Y.) to make the score 3-2.

Canada restored a two-goal advantage with a goal by Matt Duchene on a two-on-one rush at 12:11 of the second period.

Tavares netted his second power-play goal at 8:01 of the third period to account for the 5-2 final.

Cory Schneider (Marblehead, Mass.) stopped 20 shots in the first two periods of play, while Ben Bishop (Denver, Colo.) made 13 saves while manning the U.S. crease in the final period.

Team USA, which earned a 4-2 victory over Canada last night at Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio, closes out its pre-tournament slate Tuesday (Sept. 13) at 7 p.m. ET against Finland at Verizon Center in Washington, D.C. The game will be nationally televised on ESPN, in addition to being streamed live on WatchESPN.
