GAMEDAY
The U.S. Olympic Women’s Ice Hockey Team continues its preliminary-round schedule tonight against the Olympic Athletes from Russia at Kwandong Hockey Centre. Team USA is the home team and will wear its third jerseys - the royal blues.Tonight's game will be televised on NBCSN and live game updates will be provided on Twitter @USAHockey.
ALL-TIME VS. RUSSIA
The U.S. Olympic Women’s Ice Hockey Team has only faced the Russians once in Olympic tournament play, Feb. 16, 2010, at the Vancouver Olympic Winter Games. The game was part of the round robin and the U.S. won 13-0. The game still stands in the history books as the most goals the U.S. women have ever scored in an Olympic game.
ON THE WORLD STAGE
Though the U.S. has only met Russia once in Olympic play, they have met 13 times in International Ice Hockey Federation World Championship play since 1999. The U.S. has won all 13 of those meetings, outscoring the Russians 120-8. Most recently, the U.S. met Russia during the preliminary round of the 2017 IIHF Women's World Championship in Plymouth, Michigan, winning 7-0. Seven different players recorded multi-point games, including two-goal efforts by Kendall Coyne (Palos Heights, Ill.), Brianna Decker (Dousman, Wis.) and Jocelyne Lamoureux-Davidson (Grand Forks, N.D.). Goaltender Maddie Rooney (Andover, Minn.) earned a shut out in what was her U.S. Women’s National Team debut.
YOUTH HOCKEY SPOTLIGHT
Though there are so many coaches and influences that have helped players get to where they are now on the Olympic stage, Kendall Coyne (Palos Heights, Ill.) puts Coach Larry Pedrie - her first coach in AAA hockey in Chicago - at the top of that list.
"I played up a year for my first year of AAA," said Coyne. "I was really shy, but loved hockey. Coach Pedrie recognized my abilities, gave me a foundation for the game and got me out of my shell."
