U.S. Defeats Czechs, 10-0, in Second Game at 2018 Paralympics

Team USA closes preliminary round vs. Korea tomorrow 12 p.m./11 p.m. ET (March 12)

GANGNEUNG, South Korea – Declan Farmer (Tampa, Fla.) tallied four goals and Brody Roybal (Northlake, Ill.) netted a hat trick for the second straight game as the 2018 U.S. Paralympic Sled Hockey Team shut out the Czech Republic, 10-0, in its second preliminary round game of the PyeongChang 2018 Paralympic Winter Games.

“Our team was focused and ready to play today,” said Guy Gosselin, head coach of the 2018 U.S. Paralympic Sled Hockey Team. “Offensively, we were creative and moved the puck extremely well. We’ll make sure to be prepared to face a good Korean team tomorrow.”

The United States (2-0-0-0/W-OTW-OTL-L) will close preliminary round play tomorrow (March 13) when it faces host South Korea. Puck drop at Gangneung Hockey Centre is slated for 12 p.m. local time, making it an 11 p.m. ET puck drop on March 12 back in the United States. The contest will be televised live on NBCSN, in addition being streamed live on NBCOlympics.com.

Roybal put the U.S. up 1-0 just 1:04 into the game when he took a pass from Nikko Landeros (Johnstown, Colo.) in the neutral zone and skated in on goal before cutting across the crease to lift a shot over Czech netminder Martin Kudela.

Team USA doubled its lead 7:13 later with Farmer’s first tally of the game. The play started when Adam Page (Lancaster, N.Y.) fed the puck to Jack Wallace (Franklin Lakes, N.J.), whose initial shot caused a net-front scramble where Farmer was able to pick up a loose puck and backhand it into the net.

With 3:39 remaining in the game’s opening frame, Farmer scored his second of the game with a power-play tally. After the U.S. won a dra in the Czech zone, captain Josh Pauls (Green Brook, N.J.) dished the puck to Kevin McKee (Chicago, Ill.) who skated behind the net before finding Farmer in front for his second goal of the game.

The U.S. connected seven times in the middle stanza to push its lead to 10-0. The scoring started when Farmer and Wallace connected for two goals in the opening 6:45 of the frame. After Farmer put home a rebound attempt off an initial shot by Page 3:39 into the period, Wallace converted 3:06 later with a right-handed wrist shot from the top of the slot.

At the 9:46 mark, Roybal tallied his second goal of the game before Travis Dodson (Deming, N.M.) netted his first Paralympic goal less than three minutes after to extend Team USA’s lead to 7-0.

With 1:38 to play, Farmer netted his fourth goal before Roybal tallied :25 later to give himself three goals in two straight games. Dodson then added his second goal of the game in the closing seconds to give the U.S. a 10-0 lead entering the third period of play.

U.S. netminder Steve Cash (Overland, Mo.) turned aside 13 shots to preserve Team USA’s second-straight shutout win and earn his first victory of the 2018 Paralympics.

NOTES: The U.S. outshot the Czech Republic, 31-13, went 3-for-4 on the power play and finished 2-for-2 on the penalty kill.
