2018 Boys Select 15 PDC kicks off

Games set to begin on Tuesday

LET’S GET STARTED: Following a full day of practices and three-on-three games on Monday, game action gets underway Tuesday at the 2018 USA Hockey Boys Select 15 Player Development Camp at the Northtown Center in Amherst, N.Y. The 216 invited players have been divided into 12 teams comprised of 16 skaters and two goalies. Each team will play one scheduled game each day, along with an additional game on Friday based on their position in the standings. Every game this week will consist of two 25-minute halves.

THE CHAMPS ARE HERE: Nine members of the 2018 USA Hockey Youth Tier I 14U national champion Compuware team are competing in this week’s camp, including forward Dylan Duke (Northville, Mich. – Team Gray) who led the national tournament in scoring with 10 points (4G, 6A) in six games. Compuware went undefeated in the tournament (6-0), blanking Pittsburgh Pens Elite 3-0 in the championship game. They scored 25 goals and allowed just four goals in the six games. Also taking part this week are defensemen Ty Gallagher (Clarkston, Mich. – Team Gold), Ryan Mast (Bloomfield Hills, Mich. – Team Kelly), Sam Volturo (Novi, Mich. – Team Red) Andrew Jeffers (St. Clair Shores, Mich. – Team Royal); and forwards Noah Laba (Northville, Mich. – Team Kelly), Redmond Savage (Northville, Mich. – Team Orange), Eddie Shepler (Livonia, Mich. – Team Red) and Sasha Pastujov (Bradenton, Fla. – Team White).

LEADING THE WAY: Despite losing to Compuware in the 2018 USA Hockey Youth Tier I 14U national championship game, Pittsburgh Pens Elite have a camp-high 14 players from that team in attendance at this week’s camp. Goaltender Justin Cataldo (Stuart, Fla. – Team Columbia) finished the national tournament with a 3-0 record and 1.64 GAA, while forward Colby Saganiuk (Valencia, Pa. – Team Navy) topped all skaters with five goals in six games, including the overtime game-winning goal in a 4-3 victory over the Mid Fairfield Jr. Rangers. Joining them at camp this week are forwards Shawn O’Donnell (Crescent, Pa. – Team Gray), Michael Hurst (Alison Park, Pa. – Team Red) Jackson Morehouse (Sewickly, Pa. – Team Kelly), Nicholas Tirch (Mars, Pa. – Team Orange), Nicholas Sewecke (Sewickly, Pa. – Team Purple), Nick Sweet (Imperial, Pa. – Team Royal), Jack Musa (Orange Park, Fla. – Team Forest); along with defensemen Tyler Pfister (Lombard, Ill. – Team Black), Austin O’Ravetz (Canonsburg, Pa. – Team Columbia), Justin Gibson (Pittsburgh, Pa. – Team Gray), Carter Schade (Mars, Pa. – Team Purple) and Teddy Sawyer (Lewis Center, Oh. – Team White).

The numbers game: Other teams atop the leaderboard in overall representation this week include the New Jersey Colonials (10), Compuware, Little Caesars, Mid Fairfield Jr. Rangers (9), Chicago Mission (8), Los Angeles Jr. Kings, Boston Jr. Terriers, Boston Jr. Eagles, Shattuck-St. Mary’s (7), Dallas Stars Elite (6) and Buffalo Jr. Sabres (5).

ROSTER NEWS: Team Forest forward Nick Roukounakis (Pembroke, Ma.) is unable to attend this week’s camp, and has been replaced by forward Jack Musa (Orange Park, Fla.), whose older brother, Joey Musa, attended USA Hockey’s National Player Development Camps in 2015, 2016 and 2017. The Musa’s father, Joe, played collegiately at Western New England College in the early 1990s.
