In the day's opening game, Keith Petruzzelli stopped 27 shots to lead USA Blue past Finland, 4-1 before Dylan St. Cyr turned aside 27 shots to help USA White top Sweden, 4-3. In total, eight different U.S. players scored in the two wins.

"I think that's what we're looking for as a staff: quality goaltending performances and a balanced level of scoring," said Bob Motzko, head coach of the 2018 U.S. National Junior Team. "Our guys know there's another pair of games against Canada here before we condense to one roster, so we're expecting some big performances on Tuesday."

Recap: USA White 4, Sweden 3

Quinn Hughes (Orlando, Fla.) notched a goal and two assists as USA White topped Sweden, 4-3, here tonight at the 2017 World Junior Summer Showcase at USA Hockey Arena.

USA White took a 1-0 lead 5:04 into the first period thanks to Max Gerlach’s (Burnsville, Minn.) second goal of the 2017 World Junior Summer Showcase. The play started when Hughes sent the puck down the boards to Ryan Poehling (Lakeville, Minn.), who collected it at the goal line and curled back towards the boards before finding Gerlach at the top right circle for a quick wrist shot that sailed into the top left corner.

Just over four minutes later, Hughes received a pass at the blue line from Logan Brown (St. Louis, Mo.), skated around a Swedish defender and tucked the puck under the crossbar to give USA White a 2-0 advantage.

A three-goal middle stanza began 2:55 into the period when Linus Lindstrom fired a one-timer shot past Dylan St. Cyr (Northville, Mich.). Then, with 2:35 remaining, Ivan Lodnia (Novi, Mich.) pushed in a rebound off an initial shot from Jack Badini (Old Greenwich, Conn.) before Jesper Boqvist responded with 32 seconds left in the period to make it, 3-2, USA White, entering the second intermission.

USA White extended its lead :32 into the final frame when Kailer Yamamoto (Spokane, Wash.) threw the puck towards the gold and it bounced off a Sweden defender’s skate and into the net.

A slap shot by Linus Hogberg with 7:31 left in the game put Sweden within one goal, but USA White held on to earn the 4-3 victory.

St. Cyr finished the game with 27 saves from 30 shots on net.
