The Rivalry Series was introduced by USA Hockey and Hockey Canada last season and comprised three games between the women’s national teams of the two countries. Two games of the 2019-20 Rivalry Series took place in December and the final three games were played in February. The U.S. defeated Canada, 4-1, in the series opener in Hartford, Conn., on Dec. 14 before earning a hard-fought 2-1 victory over the Canadians in Moncton, N.B., on Dec. 17. The U.S. dropped a 3-2 overtime decision to Canada Monday (Feb. 3) at Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre in Victoria, British Columbia, but responded with a 3-1 win two nights later (Feb. 5) in Vancouver, British Columbia.
The U.S. won the final contest on Feb. 8, 4-3, in overtime in front of a record-breaking crowd in Anaheim, Calif. The two teams played in front 13,320 fans, which set a record for the most-attended women's national hockey team game ever played on U.S. soil. The previous record was 10,158, which was established on Jan. 6, 2002, when the U.S. faced Canada at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit.
The U.S. and Canada have battled in the gold-medal game of every IIHF Women’s World Championship and Olympic Winter Games staged, with just two exceptions (2019 World Championship, 2006 Olympics).
