Boys Select 17 Notebook Day 2: Games Start In Amherst

By USA Hockey, 06/26/19, 7:00PM EDT

Teams Red, Columbia, Grey, Forest and Navy each collected wins

Day two of the Boys Select 17 Player Development Camp got underway with practices for each team in the morning. Each practice has started out with the first 15 minutes reserved for the goalies. Hlinka Gretzky Cup goalie coach Kevin Moore was able to chat with Tommy Aitken and Remington Keopple of Team Kelly.

Along with practice, teams were able to interact in different team bonding exercises. One team played a friendly game of kickball in a big field on the campus of the University of Buffalo while another played a strategy game involving a rubber chicken. Not only are these camps developing hockey players, but many players have commented on how they have made and maintained friendships through these team bonding exercises.

Representing the Red, White and Blue

Following the practices, the teams attended a presentation by Hlinka Gretzky Head Coach Pat Ferschweiler  on team success at short events, and what type of player he and the staff are looking for. He spoke about representing your country, and what it would mean to put on the red, white and blue jersey.

Today's Games

Red 4 Royal 1: Red won their first game against Royal, with 10 different players collecting points. Avery Hayes, Alexander Teleguine, Brandon Chabrier and Donald Kempf scored for Red. Kempf also added an assist on the Hayes goal. Hunter Hastings collected the Royal goal. Louden Hogg stopped all 16 shots he faced for Red.

Columbia 8, Black 5: Tanner Kelly scored two goals to help Columbia to a game one victory over Black. Kelly was the only member of Columbia to score two goals, but Alexander Farmer found the back of the net twice for Black. Johan Rosenquist, Thomas Weis, Bret Link, Victor Czerneckianair and Kyle Kukkonen were the other goal scorers for Columbia. Ryan Beck, Nicholas Chmelevski and Matthew Romer joined Farmer in the goal column for Black.

Grey 5, Kelly 4 (SO): Gustave Bylin made a toe save on the final save of a shootout to give Grey their first win. Each team scored twice in each of the two frames. Four different players scored in regulation for Grey, with Matthew MacDonald, Brendan Gibbons, Matthew DeBoer, and Robert Hyde finding the back of the net. Issac Novak scored twice for Kelly, with Maxwell Tobin and Ian Moore also adding markers.

Forest 6, White 3: Three players had multi-goal efforts in the first game for each team. Jack Williams, Noah Fowler and Noah Ellis all scored twice. Samuel Deckhut and John Waldron each scored for Forest, while Michael Cameron added a goal and an assist for White. Tucker Tynan stopped all 13 shots he faced.

Gold 4, Navy 2: Artem Shlaine scored both Navy goals, but it was not enough as Gold scored four times to win. Blake Biondi had a goal and an assist, while Nicholas O'Hanisain and Aidan Cobb tallied a goal a piece. Grant Riley made 13 saves.

Coach Spotlight: Brianne McLaughlin

Brianne McLaughlin is one of three coaches at the Boys Select 17 camp that have represented the United States at the Winter Olympics. She skated for the red, white and blue in the Vancouver Games in 2010 and Sochi in 2014, and also played on the U.S. Women's National Team at the IIHF Women's World Championships from 2011-13.

The Robert Morris graduate skated with Team USA right after college, and also played for two seasons with the Buffalo Beauts in the NWHL.

"This is my first camp on the boys side," McLaughlin said. "I've worked two goalie camps on the women's side, and have another one later this summer. It's been good so far."

McLaughlin also has a five-month-old son.
