Nick Fohr Named Head Coach of 2024 U.S. Under-18 Men's National Team

Team USA opens IIHF U18 World Championship against Slovakia on April 25

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Nick Fohr (Grand Forks, N.D.), who is completing his second season as a head coach at USA Hockey's National Team Development Program, will serve as head coach of the U.S. Under-18 Men's National Team that will compete in the upcoming 2024 IIHF Under-18 Men's World Championship, it was announced today by USA Hockey.

The tournament is set for April 25-May 5 in Espoo and Vantaa, Finland. The U.S. will compete in Group A alongside Finland, Latvia, Norway and Slovakia, and will open tournament play against Slovakia on April 25 at 7:00 a.m. ET. All Team USA games will broadcast live on NHL Network.

Fohr will be joined by assistant coaches Matt Gilroy (North Bellmore, N.Y.), Ryan Bourque (Topsfield, Mass.), David Lassonde (Durham, N.H.) and Mike Hamilton (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.).

ABOUT FOHR

Fohr will serve as the head coach of the Under-18 Men's National Team for the first time, having been an assistant coach for Team USA at this tournament on six previous occasions, including two gold-medal teams (2015 & 2017) and three silver medal-winning squads (2013, 2018, 2022). Additionally, Fohr was on staff of the 2023 U.S. National Junior Team that captured the bronze medal at the 2023 IIHF World Junior Championship.

Fohr, who is completing his 13th season on the bench with USA Hockey's National Team Development Program, began his coaching career as a student assistant at the University of Nebraska-Omaha for the 2002-03 campaign, spent one season with Miami University (2003-04) and returned to UNO as director of hockey operations (2004-07) and assistant coach (2007-11) before joining USA Hockey.

ABOUT GILROY

In his second season as an assistant coach with USA Hockey's National Team Development Program, Gilroy is making his IIHF debut behind the bench for Team USA. Earlier this year, the Long Island native served as an assistant coach for Team USA at the 2024 Youth Olympic Games and helped the U.S. to a gold medal.

Before turning to coaching, Gilroy played 10 seasons (2009-19) of professional hockey throughout the NHL and Europe. On the international stage, he served as alternate captain for the 2018 U.S. Olympic Men's Ice Hockey Team and also played for Team USA at the 2010 IIHF Men's World Championship. Gilroy skated collegiately for four seasons at Boston University, where he captained the Terriers to a national championship his senior season and was named the sixth defenseman to win the Hobey Baker Memorial Award in 2009.

ABOUT BOURQUE

Bourque, in his initial season at USA Hockey's National Team Development Program, is making his IIHF coaching debut. He joined USA Hockey after two seasons as an assistant coach with the ECHL's South Carolina Stingrays, where he helped lead the team to a South Division championship in 2022-23.

Prior to going behind the bench, Bourque played nine seasons (2011-20) of professional hockey, including time with the New York Rangers during the 2014-15 campaign. Before turning pro, Bourque helped Team USA to four medals in IIHF events, including golds at the 2009 IIHF Under-18 Men's World Championship and 2010 IIHF World Junior Championship.

ABOUT LASSONDE

Lassonde, in his fourth season as USA Hockey's national goaltending coach, brings over 30 years of experience to the staff, including collegiate stops at Dartmouth College, University of Denver, University of New Hampshire, Miami University and the University of Wisconsin.

Lassonde has served as an assistant coach for U.S. teams on the international stage 10 times, most recently for the 2024 U.S. National Junior Team and 2023 U.S. Under 18 Men's National Team, which both claimed gold medals.

ABOUT HAMILTON

Hamilton, who is making his IIHF coaching debut, serves as a volunteer assistant coach at USA Hockey's National Team Development Program with the Under-18 Team, where he focuses on video breakdown.

Before joining the NTDP, the Michigan native spent five seasons as head coach of the USHL's Muskegon Lumberjacks, where he led the team to an Eastern Conference title in 2018-19 and was named the 2020-2021 USHL Coach of the Year.

USA Hockey has also announced additional staff in support of the 2024 U.S. Under-18 Men's National Team including general manager Scott Monaghan (Ho-Ho-Kus, N.J.); assistant general manager Rod Braceful (Detroit, Mich.); strength and conditioning coach Joe Meloni (Falmouth, Mass.); hockey operations manager Gaby Turer (Milwaukee, Wis.); equipment manager Brock Bradley (West Stockholm, N.Y.); athletic trainer Dennis MacDonald (Detroit, Mich.); team physician Dr. Charles Popkin (Medina, Minn.); communications manager Jon Edwards (Neversink, N.Y.) and digital content manager Caleigh Burchfield (Lakeville, Conn.).
