Santini Added to 2016 U.S. Men's National Team

2015-16 Hockey East Defenseman of the Year Pushes U.S. Roster to 23

Defenseman Steven Santini (Mahopac, N.Y./New Jersey Devils/Boston College) has been added to the 2016 U.S. Men's National Team that will compete at the International Ice Hockey Federation Men's World Championship May 6-22 in Moscow and St. Petersburg, Russia.

Santini will be representing the United States for the third time. A member of the 2014 U.S. National Junior Team, Santini helped the U.S. Men's National Under-18 to a silver medal at the 2013 IIHF Men's Under-18 World Championship where he received the directorate award as the tournament's best defenseman.

A member of USA Hockey's National Team Development Program for two seasons (2011-13), Santini made his NHL debut with the New Jersey Devils on April 9, 2016, after spending three seasons with the Boston College Eagles. An alternate captain this past season, the 2015-16 Hockey East Defenseman of the Year helped the Eagles to two Hockey East regular-season championships (2014, 2016), two Beanpot titles (2014, 2016), and two NCAA Frozen Four appearances (2014, 2016).

NOTES: John Hynes (New Jersey Devils) is serving as head coach of the 2016 U.S. Men's National Team ... Of the current 23 players on the U.S. Men's National Team roster, 15 are alumni of the United States Hockey League, the only Tier I junior league in the United States; six spent time in the North American Hockey League, the only Tier II junior league in the U.S.; 19 have competed at the NCAA Division I level; and 14 played for USA Hockey's National Team Development Program ... The staff and players of the 2016 U.S. Men's National Team are selected by the U.S. Men's National Team Advisory Group, led by Jim Johannson, assistant executive director of hockey operations for USA Hockey. Other members include Stan Bowman (Chicago Blackhawks), Dean Lombardi (Los Angeles Kings), David Poile (Nashville Predators), RayShero (New Jersey Devils), Dale Tallon (Florida Panthers) and Don Waddell (Carolina Hurricanes). In addition, Chris Drury (New York Rangers) will serve as a member of the management group for the 2016 U.S. Men's National Team ... Teams will play a round-robin format within their group and the top four teams from each group will advance to the quarterfinals. The U.S. will play its seven preliminary round games in St. Petersburg at Yubileiny Arena … USA Hockey's international council, chaired by Gavin Regan (Potsdam, N.Y.), has oversight responsibilities for all U.S. national teams.
