GAMEDAY
The U.S. Women’s National Team will play its second game of the 2018 Four Nations Cup today against Canada at SaskTel Centre. The game will be streamed live on HockeyTV.com, and live game updates will be provided by @USAHockey on Twitter.
LOOKING BACK
The U.S. defeated Finland, 5-1, yesterday (Tuesday) in its opening game of the tournament. Eleven members of Team USA contributed points in the victory, highlighted by Sydney Brodt (North Oaks, Minn.), Dani Cameranesi (Plymouth, Minn.), Brianna Decker (Dousman, Wis.) and Hilary Knight (Sun Valley, Idaho), who each registered two points apiece. All five goals for the U.S. came during a second-period surge after trailing, 1-0, following the opening 20 minutes. Decker was named U.S. player of the game in the win.
RIVALRY RENEWED
Tonight’s meeting marks the first time that the U.S. Women’s National Team meets Canada in an international tournament since the 2018 Olympic Winter Games, where the two teams faced off twice. First, Kendall Coyne (Palos Heights, Ill.) scored and Maddie Rooney (Andover, Minn.) made 21 saves, but the U.S. fell to Canada, 2-1, in its final preliminary round game. Outshooting Canada 45-23, the U.S. saw a number of high quality scoring chances – including a shot off the post – nearly tying the game toward the end, but none were able to connect as time expired. The U.S. would meet Canada again in the gold-medal game, where it defeated its northern rival in thrilling overtime fashion.
HEAD TO HEAD AT FOUR NATIONS
At the 2017 Four Nations Cup, the U.S. met Canada twice and won both contests. In the tournament final, Hannah Brandt (Vadnais Heights, Minn.) scored twice as the U.S. topped Canada, 5-1, to claim the 2017 tournament title. Over the past three Four Nations Cup tournaments, the U.S. holds a 4-1-0-1 advantage over Canada, including having won three championship games in a row, and has outscored its opponent, 22-11.
