KRASNOYARSK, Russia – Today, the U.S. Women’s National University Team (2-0-0-3/W-OTW-OTL-L) clinched a spot in the semifinals with a 6-1 victory over China in its final preliminary round game at the 2019 Winter World University Games.
“I'm proud of how our team has come together," said Shelley Looney, head coach of the 2019 U.S. Women’s National University Team. "It showed in how they played today. Everyone played strong and cohesively in the offensive zone all game. We’re looking forward to the semi finals."
Team USA opened the scoring at the 9:44 mark of the first period off the stick of Jaiden Forrest (Grand Rapids, Mich./Davenport University).
Forrest's goal was assisted by Maddie Wolsmann (Maple Grove, Minn./Michigan State University) and Katie Stelling (Santa Cruz, Calif./Lindenwood University - Belleville).
After outshooting China 13-4 in the opening frame, Team USA went to the locker room holding a 1-0 lead.
After China was penalized for having too many players on the ice, Team USA capitalized on the power play to double its lead.
Wolsmann picked up her second point of the game, scoring the goal with Kathleen Ash (Lakewood, Colo./University of Colorado) and Shelby Bradford (Marine City, Mich./Liberty University) picking up helpers.
The U.S. extended its lead to 3-0 just four minutes later when Forrest scored her second goal of the game off an assist from Lauren McDonald (Rochester, Minn./Liberty University).
The U.S. scored once more in the second period with 3:53 remaining as Ash collected her second point of the game, capitalizing off an assist from Maeve Reilly (Ridgefield, Conn./College of the Holy Cross) to expand the lead to 4-0.
After China was assessed a tripping penalty 4:22 into the third period, the U.S. scored on the power play to bring the score to 5-0.
Ash collected her second goal and third point of the game, scoring on the power play with Reilly and Christy VonAulock (Des Plaines, Ill./University of Miami-Ohio) picking up the assists.
China scored its first goal of the game on the power play before Wolsmann added her second goal of the game to bring the lead to 6-1.
Forrest and Kathleen McNamara (Montville, N.J./Boston College) picked up assists on the sixth and final U.S. goal.
Team USA will face Russia on Monday (March 11) at 7:30 a.m. ET. The game will be streamed live here.
NOTES: Ash (2G, 1A), Forrest (2G, 1A) and Wolsmann (2G, 1A) each collected three points ... Team USA outshot China, 50-13 and went 2-for-4 on the power play and 0-for-1 on the penalty kill ... At the 2019 Winter World University Games, Team USA is competing in Group A alongside the Canada, China, Japan, Russia and Switzerland.
