KRASNOYARSK, Russia – Today, the U.S. Women’s National University Team (2-0-1-4/W-OTW-OTL-L) fell to Japan in overtime, 2-1, at the 2019 Winter World University Games third place game.
Team USA had a strong start to the game, successfully killing two penalties in the first 13 minutes of the contest.
Using the momentum from the special teams play, the U.S. drew a penalty and scored on its first power play chance of the game.
Kathleen McNamara (Montville, N.J./Boston College) scored the opening goal at the 13:45 mark for the U.S. with Kathleen Ash (Lakewood, Colo./University of Colorado) and Maeve Reilly (Ridgefield, Conn./College of the Holy Cross) picking up the assists.
Japan responded with a goal of its own late in the first period at the 16:15 mark to tie the game at one.
Neither team could find the back of the net in the second period as both squads successfully killed one penalty to keep the score even heading into the third.
The third period was similar to the second as each team took one penalty during the final stanza.
However, neither team could capitalize on its power play opportunity and the game went to overtime tied at one.
Japan scored 45 seconds into overtime to win the contest, 2-1, and claim third place.
NOTES: Team USA outshot Japan, 41-39 ... The U.S. went 1-for-4 on the power play and 4-for-4 on the penalty kill ...
